Indian roof turtles, (Pangshura tecta) a Schedule- I species (Wildlife Protection Act, 1972) is distributed widely across the Indian rivers and one among the few surviving populations outside a Protected Area was found in the city of Jalpaiguri Lota Devi Kali temple’s pond. Lota Devi Kali temple, situated on the banks of the Karala River in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal is a home for a population of 20 individuals of the Indian roofed turtles.

The daily rush of devotees to the temple poured their religious offerings of milk, vermillion, incense sticks and oil spillage from lamps into the pond, choking the turtles and damaging their habitat. In addition to this threat, domestic dogs and general public also resorted to stealing eggs, hunting hatchlings and trading their meat. To immediately address the problem and save the remaining few individuals Wildlife trust of India initiated this project to address this issue.

Taking into account the cultural significance of the temple and turtles in this site, WTI engaged the temple authorities and forest department with the conservation measures that were to be implemented. Community participation has always proven to be successful for wildlife conservation irrespective of the region. A barb wire fence was constructed around the peripheral area of the pond providing enough space for turtles to move between the pond and river situated behind the temple. Reinforced concrete pillars were installed to provide extra support and stability in the clayey fertile soil. The fencing would help prevent the entry of poachers and the devotees from approaching the pond area posing harm to the turtles. Dredging was done to clean the pond and local aquatic and semi-aquatic species, fishes etc. were introduced in the location to create the necessary habitat for the turtles. Additionally, to divert devotees from pouring their offerings directly into the pond a small turtle temple was built near the holy pond. An idol of the Turtle form god (Kurma Avatar) being designed by local artisans has been installed in the temple. This will set aside a designated area for offerings and thereby help maintain the pond habitat. The balance between traditional beliefs and conservation of the species was thereby maintained in Jalpaiguri through this project.
